NYNonProfit Look back: Andrew Cuomo

NYNonProfit Lookback: Andrew Cuomo

NYNonProfit Nancy Konipol and Andrew Cuomo

Still looking through the early NYNonProfit editorials…

In 2006, now Governor Cuomo was New York State Attorney General. He graciously took time out of his busy schedule to write an editorial for NYNoProfit.com about the wonderful organization he founded in 1986, Help USA.

Help USA has helped over 250,000 homeless individuals with housing and supportive services. It has grown with the times, adding employment services, educational services and child care.

It is still going strong, and leaves a great legacy.

New York City Coalition Against Hunger, led by Executive Joel Berg is an organization I am very close to.

Besides being a great friend of mine for the past decade, Joel is one of the leading authorities on hunger issues in the United States, with the main focus on New York City. His book, All You Can Eat: How Hungry is America? Is the most well-reviewed book on American Hunger of the last decade.

The New York City Coalition Against Hunger is the voice for the more than 1100 nonprofit soup kitchens and food pantries in NYC and the over one million low-income New Yorkers who live in households that can’t afford enough food for their family.

Also featured in this issue of NYNonProfit.com was an amazing organization, StreetWise Partners.

Streetwise Partners uses an innovate method of mentoring to help low-income individuals are ready to overcome barriers to employment and transform their lives.

Individuals are matched with corporate mentors for a three month period in order to develop leaders in the private sector who have a commitment to service to their community and equip trainees to move into better, higher paying jobs with opportunities for advancement.

I have a special attachment to this wonderful nonprofit as its Founder, Matt Gorin spent about 2 hours with me on the phone (before I even met him), advising me on certain aspects of starting NYNonProfit.com.

Matt is a co-founder and Managing Partner at Contour Venture Partners, an early state venture capital firm based in NYC.

The Partnership for the Homeless was the 4th organization featured in NYNonProfit’s Hunger/Homelessness/Poverty issue.

The Partnership provides emergency shelter and housing to homeless individuals.

In recent years the Partnership has adopted a new strategic approach that brings its direct services together with social science research and policy advocacy to finally set us on a course to end homelessness.

Wow, reading about all these organizations and amazing people again is so exciting!

I can’t wait to meet you and hear about all your wonderful organizations and work as well!
